Jacob Parsons: Excelling in Product Design and Target Rifle Shooting

Jacob main banner image

By day, Jacob Parsons is a skilled product design engineer for VIP-Polymers, creating innovative solutions with precision and attention to detail. By night and on weekends, he channels those same qualities into his passion for target rifle shooting. Jacob’s expertise in both fields recently earned him a sponsorship from VIP-Polymers.

From Engineering to Shooting

Jacob image 3

Jacob’s work as a product design engineer withing the company and his target rifle shooting shares a common trend: Precision. In his engineering role, he meticulously designs products, ensuring every detail is perfect. This same focus and care are evident in his shooting, where accuracy and control are crucial.

Jacob started shooting aged 14 with the Cadets, where he quickly got involved in competitive shooting and has since gone on to represent Great Britain on several occasions as a junior.

About Target Rifle Shooting

Target rifle shooting is a challenging sport which involves prone single shot precision shooting at targets set distances between 300 to 1200 yards (275 to 1100 meters). Jacob uses a specialized rifle, a System Gemini (7.62×51mm NATO), single-shot, bolt-action rifle ideal for both short and long-range shooting, built here in the UK.  As well as being able to hold a steady aim, the key challenge is being able to judge and allow for the direction and strength of the wind and other weather conditions especially at the longer ranges.

Recent Competitions and Achievements

Jacob has recently competed in two major events, showcasing his skill and dedication:

UK NRA Inter Counties Challenge Trophy (June 8-9)

Held at the National Shooting Centre in Surrey, this event tested shooters over two days:

  • Day 1 focused on short-range shooting.
  • Day 2 moved to long-range targets.

Jacob represented Sussex; a county known for its strong shooting teams. The Sussex team, consisting of 8 shooters, 2 wind coaches, and a captain, competed against 21 other teams from 25 counties, totaling around 250 competitors. Despite tough, windy conditions, Jacob and his team performed exceptionally well, securing the bronze medal. This was a significant achievement, given how competitive it is to get a place in the Sussex team, which includes world champions, Queens Prize winners, and a Commonwealth Games medalist.

Scottish Open Championships (June 14-16)

Jacob traveled to the Scottish Highlands to compete in the Scottish Open Championships at Jubilee Range, Blair Atholl. Despite challenging wet weather, the competition saw very high scores. Jacob stood out as one of the top English shooters at the event:

  • During the long-range competition on Sunday, he achieved the joint top score, not dropping any points.
  • Overall, he placed 14th in the Association Gold and Silver Medal match at short range, highlighting his consistent performance across different conditions.

VIP-Polymers Sponsorship: A Boost to Excellence

VIP’s sponsorship is a game-changer for Jacob. It provides him with the resources to enhance his skills, upgrade his equipment, and compete in more prestigious events. This support is crucial as Jacob continues to balance his career in product design with his passion for shooting.

Looking Ahead

With VIP-Polymers backing him, Jacob is poised to reach new heights in both his engineering career and his shooting sport. He embodies the precision and dedication required to excel in both arenas. Whether he’s crafting the next innovative product or aiming for a distant target, Jacob is a model of excellence.

Stay tuned for updates on Jacob’s progress in upcoming competitions and his ongoing journey with VIP-Polymers sponsorship.

IFAT2024 – The Journey from Huntingdon to Munich

IFAT2024

VIP-POLYMERS TAKES A JOURNEY BACK TO MUNICH FOR IFAT2024.

The Stand

Two years since the last IFAT (which was the first big event after most travel restrictions had been lifted) VIP-Polymers were preparing for IFAT2024.

This time around it was decided to enlist the help of a stand builder to give the VIP booth a more eye catching look.  The marketing team investigated a number of options but ended up enlisting the help of Mavonorm-Global a polish exhibition specialist who work very closely with Messe Munchen on a number of trade events.

After the initial brief had been given Mavonorm’s design team got to creating a number of CAD examples for us to work with, the initial concept was tweaked and the final design was signed off, ready for the marketing team to create the artwork for the printed panels.

Literature, Giveaways and Promotional Video

With the stand design all underway the focus was on the printed literature, and with a number of updates and new products having recently been launched, it was a case of reviewing all of the current printed material, and updating where needed.

Whilst this was happening we were discussing what would be best for the giveaways, and it ultimately came down to what would take up less room when it came to transporting everything over to Germany, so branded pens and bottle opener key-rings were chosen.

A massive thank you to the team at PRINT4BIZ who helped us with all our printing requirements and giveaways, and turning everything around in a matter of weeks.

The final item that needed work on was the presentation video which would be running on the screen during the exhibition.  With the help of Jacob our Technical Design Engineer, and the marketing team we were able to create some really interesting and captivating 3D CAD Models to be used in the main presentation video.

The Main Event

After weeks of preparation it was time to pack up all of the samples, displays and marketing material and hand over everything to our shipping agent 24/7 Worldwide Exhibitions Ltd.  Flights and hotels booked we were ready to set off.

All the hard work had paid off, with a great start to the first day which only got better as the week went by.  We caught up with so many current customers and met plenty more potential customers from all over the world.

Compared to IFAT 2022 it was notable busier with many more nationalities attending, which opened up new and interesting opportunities in territories we had yet to discover.

Until next time thank you to all of you that took time out of you busy schedules and came to catch up with us, and a huge thank you to all of the VIP Team who helped make the exhibition a success.  A final thank you goes to Tobais from Crassus our German Distributor who came not only to help with translating but was more than happy to get stuck in helping breakdown and repack the stand at the end of the show, even with a 5 hour drive back home ahead of him.

End of Year Message

VIP Christmas

What a year 2022 has been; just when we believed life was getting back to normal after COVID, we have one month of rest-bite before the whole world gets turned upside down due to the conflict in Ukraine, which had some considerable knock-on effects.

It’s safe to say that as a country, we rely a lot on the efforts of other countries; the shortage of raw materials needed to produce rubber has been challenging; add to this, the increase in energy costs it’s been a difficult juggling act. We are now battling record-breaking inflation and the prospect of a tough recession, all of which are hitting each of us, not just here in the UK but worldwide. The UK Government was in turmoil for most of the year, with in-house fighting, coos, resignations (some sooner than expected), scandal and more.

Difficult times bring on some of the most significant changes; as the end of the year approaches, VIP-Polymers are getting ready to celebrate its 100th year. When you look back in the history books, VIP-Polymers have been through many ups and downs with Wars, Recessions, The joining of the EU & BREXIT, Changes in Governments, Laws, New Monarchs, Pandemics the list is endless. However, we have come through all these changes as a company and are still here to tell our story.

It’s pretty evident that as a business VIP have to look outside the box during these difficult times, which is not a wrong move as it allows the company to look at new ways to become more efficient, reduce energy cost, and reduce waste all while making sure we keep and improve on our ongoing commitment to you our customers in terms of support, development of new products, guidance and so on.

You may have seen our recent update regarding the significant investment of 3 new Maplan Rapid+460 Injection moulding machines, and the benefits these will have. Of course, there is also the ongoing updating/improvement of our current production lines to become more efficient and increase production capabilities.

We are also continuing to reduce our overall carbon footprint. Out of the 9 Company cars currently on the books, over half of these are EV/Hybrid, with 3 being full EVs. The vehicles that are still Petrol/Diesel models are due to be changed alongside the Hybrid models. Still, global car manufacturing industry delays are being seen due to difficulties in obtaining components. By QTR4, at the latest, all colleagues will have access to their new EV cars, meaning that the entire EV fleet of company cars will help reduce the company’s Carbon footprint substantially.

We are also increasing our In-House design, testing & development to look at new product lines and development of current products for our existing and new & emerging markets.

We want to thank all our Customers, suppliers, colleagues, and their families for their continued support throughout 2022; we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to celebrating our 100th year together in 2023.

We have taken delivery of 3 new machines…

Maplan Rapid+460

Earlier this year, VIP-Polymers decided to invest in increasing production capacity, whilst reducing energy costs.

An order was placed with MAPLAN for 3 state-of-the-art RAPID+460 Automated Injection Moulding Machines.

As with most things these past 12 months, there were delays due to delays in components/materials needed to manufacture these machines, but VIP is pleased to announce that they have taken delivery of the new machines.

Not the most ideal days to take delivery, after a heavy snowfall Sunday evening and below-freezing temperatures for unloading 3 trucks first thing on a Monday morning.  With the snow cleared to allow access for the Crane and trucks the job of unloading was underway.

The machines are now in situ, in a brand new production cell in the factory, installed and ready for setting up and calibration in the new year, ready to run full production by the end of January.

This is a great way to start VIP’s 100th Year.

Investing in the future.

VIP Investing in the Future

VIP-Polymers are close to celebrating 100 years of manufacturing rubber seals, gaskets, and flexible couplings. Established in the UK back in 1923 VIP-Polymers there have been some huge changes in the industry which have meant that the company have had to adapt and develop to continue being a leader in the industry. The main thing to take note of is its British heritage and manufacturing has been at the core of the business and will continue to do so.

In the past 12 months, VIP-Polymers have invested heavily in the development and future-proofing of the company allowing them to continue being one of the leading rubber gaskets, seals, and flexible coupling manufacturers in the market.

The investment has been across all aspects of the company not just in new machinery but also in staff, product lines and more.

A program of updating the current machinery is already underway, with new machines being added to the factory floor, to either help increase production capacity, or streamline the production process.

The VIPSeal® Brand has also seen some major changes in the past 6 months with the addition of Jon Hunt and Lee Davies working alongside John Atkinson as area sales managers for the whole of the UK. With the increase in sales managers, the company has been able to split the areas into much more manageable journeys allowing the sales team to spend more time developing existing and new relationships in their local areas with merchants and distributors alike.

Another major part of the future of VIP-Polymers is how to reduce its carbon footprint and become a more sustainable business. This is difficult when your whole business revolves around the manufacturing of rubber products, but steps have already been put into place to help reduce the company’s carbon footprint, and a 5-year action plan has already been implemented.

One of the initial changes was replacing all the old lighting in the factory with new low-energy LED lighting, this has not only reduced electricity usage but has made for a lighter environment for the workforce.

The company has already taken delivery of two new Full EV cars, and it is expected that by QTR3 2023 all company cars run by VIP-Polymers will be fully electric, this includes the VIPSeal Sales team who travel right across the UK daily. In anticipation of the increase in EV vehicles 4 charging ports have been installed outside the factory and offices.

VIP-Polymers in-house laboratory team are constantly pushing the boundaries of rubber compounds, and one of the main objectives for the team is to look at new compounds that are more sustainable, and easy to recycle, but still offer the same high standards that are needed and expected of from seals, couplings, and gaskets.

VIP-Polymers are proud to be 100% British Owned and funded with all research, design, development, and manufacturing being completed at their Cambridgeshire headquarters.

Another Step to Net Carbon Zero – Sustainable Packaging

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING BANNER

Reducing Waste using sustainable packaging!

In a move to reduce VIP Polymers Carbon footprint, the company have invested in heavy-duty, reusable sustainable shipping crates, as a trial to remove the need for Cardboard packaging and plastic wrap.

The increased cost / initial outlay for these shipping crates is balanced out by the numerous benefits they offer to both VIP Polymers and the client.

Being a modular design, each crate is stored flat, meaning there is no additional space needed to store the cartons when not in use.  Stacked flat these cartons take up the same floor space as the same number of regular pallets.

The robust design of these crates allows for regular reuse with minimum fear of collapse or damage to the packaging during inclement weather unlike the use of cardboard.

Once built up, each of the crates can be stacked securely allowing for easy storage and movement of multiple pallets at any given time.  Being rigid there is another key benefit which is the fact there is less likelihood of damaged goods in transit/storage, which has always been an issue and is a key area which as a company we are looking to reduce/eradicate.

A benefit to the customer that has become apparent during the winter months is the ability to unload the crates and leave them outside whilst warehouse staff work to create space for the shipment.  This is something that just can’t be done with the current cardboard cartons, which once damp lose their integrity and ability to store neatly.

The plan for VIP Polymers is to trial this with several key accounts, where we are delivering orders weekly, which allows for stocked crates to be delivered and flat packed used crates to be collected ready to be reused for the next shipment.  Should these trials prove positive and the feedback we receive not only from the customer but also the transport company and internally with our warehouse and production team is all positive, VIP Polymers will look to invest in more

By reducing the use of single-use cardboard, that once delivered to the customer has no way to be traced in terms of the recycling process and less reliance on pallet wrap to secure each pallet, along with the reduction in damage in transit claims we hope that this small change can have a larger impact into the overall goal to become Net Carbon Zero.

A move to 100% EV Company Cars

EV CARS

The Future is EV and for a good reason!

Company Cars are VIP’s biggest producer of carbon, far exceeding almost all other aspects of the company, in the past 5 years VIP Polymers have been moving away from the standard Diesel and Petrol company cars and replacing these with Plugin Hybrids to help reduce our Carbon Footprint.

Recently the company took a commercial decision to phase out all Diesel, Petrol and Hybrid company vehicles and replace them with 100% EV carbon-neutral models.

The first of the changes happened at the end of November when we replaced a VW Passat Plug-In Hybrid with the lasted generation of the BMW iX3 100% EV producing 0g/KM emissions.

Over the next 12 months, further cars will be replaced with fully electric models when their contracts end.  Future-proofing this move we have added 4 EV charging points and marked these out for the use of Electric vehicles only.

EV CHARGING POINTS

EV CHARGING POINTS AND SEGREGATED SPACES

The reason for this commercial decision is to help half the Carbon footprint of the company cars over the next 5 years this is in line with a number of other changes which have already been implemented and changes that are in development.

For further information regards our Carbon Footprint and how we are looking to reduce our impact on the environment contact the QEHS team or speak to your sales contact.
